Professor Seaton qualified from Cambridge University in 1962. He trained in Liverpool in general medicine, cardiology and neurology. After senior posts as a chest physician in West Virginia, USA, and Cardiff, he was director of the Institute of Occupational Medicine in Edinburgh from 1978-90. From 1988 to 2003 he was head of the department of Environmental and Occupational Medicine in Aberdeen University. Since retiring he continues his research at the University of Aberdeen and at the Institute of Occupational Medicine, Edinburgh. His interests are the aetiology of asthma, and the cardiac effects of air pollution and nanoparticles. He chaired the Government’s Expert Panel on Air Quality Standards from 1991-2001 and was a member of the Royal Society/Royal Academy of Engineering’s working group on nanoscience and nanotechnology.
